Morphology of the cyst of Blastocystis hominis.

چکیده
Blastocystis horninis is a common human parasite which is probably transmitted through a cystic stagevia the oral-fecal route (Boreham and Stenzel, 1993). A number of publications have appeared on the morphology of the cyst at the ultrastructure level (Stenzel and Boreham, 199 1 ; Zaman et 01, 1993; Stenzel et 01, 1993) but so far its light microscopic appearance has not been adequately described. This is clearly needed, as laboratory diagnosis is based on light microscopy. There are two possible reasons for the lack of this information; the first is the relatively small size of the cyst (3-5 pm in the electron microscope) and the difficulty in separating it from the non-cystic stages of the parasite. A concentration technique has recently been described which obviates this problem by removing all the non-cystic stages and selectively concentrating the cysts (Zaman and Khan, 1994). Briefly the technique is as follows:

A molecular prevalence of Blastocystis hominis in patients referred to medical diagnosis laboratories in Khorramabad city
Background : Blastocystis hominis is an anaerobic, zoonotic protozoan parasite which inhabits the large intestine of humans and a wide range of other vertebrates. It has a worldwide distribution and infects hosts through the cyst of the parasite by contaminated water or food. Its prevalence is related to hygienic culture, season, exposure to animals, and age. A number of studies in the last dec...
متن کاملBlastocystis Hominis, Intestinal Parasite or Nonpathogen Microorganism?
Blastocystis hominis is a worldwide distributed microorganism with no definite host. In addition to human beings it has been diagnosed in variety of animals. This organism which is abundantly found in routine stool examinations and also 'in some cases has been identified as a factor causing severe diarrhea, earlier regarded as a fungi. Later it was distinguished as cyst of intesinal Trichomonas...
متن کاملA concentration technique for obtaining viable cysts of blastocystis hominis from faeces.
Blastocystis hominisis a common parasite implicated in a variety of intestinal problems. Oral-faecal route of transmission has been postulated but the cystic phase which is presumably the infective stage of the parasite, has only recently been described using electron microscope. However, little information is available on the light microscopic morphology of the cyst. There are two possible rea...
متن کاملMorphology and frequency distribution of protozoan Blastocystis hominis.
Eight hundred stool specimens were examined for the presence of Blastocystis Hominis (BH) by direct microscopy in Saline and Iodine and by concentration with formal saline ether method. Four hundred specimens were positive for Cyst or Ova of various parasites, of which BH was present in 12% samples. Of the total 400 positive cases 56% were positive for Protozoa and within this group 21% were po...
متن کاملPolypeptides associated with in vitro cyst formation of Blastocystis hominis.
The objective of this study was to characterize the polypeptides associated with cysts of Blastocystis hominis. This form is believed to be infective and plays a role in parasite resistance to anti-B. hominis drugs currently used for treatment of Blastocystis associated diarrhea. Cysts were induced through in vitro culture of the parasite in complete medium supplemented with bacterial extract w...
